My Heart Beats For You

I carried you safe under my heart
You heard every beat of my heart
How every pulse of my being rang true
Every heartbeat was pulsing for you

You cuddled inside in my warmth
Never will there be a place so safe
How I love you my child, my light
How I yearn to kiss your face goodnight

I left you as my heart was pulled
To care for another just like you
A baby with no one to care for
Hungry, sick and forlorn

If I could turn back time
Would I then choose a different path?
If I didn’t know any better would I differ
In doing what I have done in haste and succor?

I wanted to be your mother
From the time I knew how to spell
But you didn’t have a face then,
No name, only an emotion rare

Should a mother choose one over another?
This is mine to save, kill the other?
Can a woman say she truly cares
If she leaves some other child in despair?

I might not be able to hold you again
Kiss your face, pat your head
You might cry to feel my arms
Enfolding you to make you feel safe

Believe me, my child, I have never loved you more
But you were the one who made me sure
I didn’t choose some other child over you,
When I went to save the other, I thought it was you.
