Garbage Solution

Being a tourist destination, what we need are specially demarcated areas, with clear instructions:" Dump beer cans/bottles here", “Place your plastic here" "Leave your extras here". Negative signs such as: "This is village Panchayat of ____. Keep it green. Don't throw your waste here” are clear signs of a body that doesn’t really think well along with being not very inviting to tourists, or anyone for that matter.            The biggest problem that anyone in Goa, especially those who live in apartments, faces is where to dump our waste. I don’t mean plastic bags or wet waste. I am talking of things such as old pillows that are beyond use, old utensils that can’t be used for gardening purposes in tiny flats, old broken kitchen apparatus that can’t be fixed or mended, compressed wood that is beyond recognition and can’t even be burned for firewood.     ...

My Heart Beats For You

I carried you safe under my heart  You heard every beat of my heart How every pulse of my being rang true Every heartbeat was pulsing for you   You cuddled inside in my warmth Never will there be a place so safe How I love you my child, my light How I yearn to kiss your face goodnight   I left you as my heart was pulled To care for another just like you A baby with no one to care for Hungry, sick and forlorn   If I could turn back time Would I then choose a different path? If I didn’t know any better would I differ In doing what I have done in haste and succor?   I wanted to be your mother From the time I knew how to spell But you didn’t have a face then, No name, only an emotion rare   Should a mother choose one over another? This is mine to save, kill the other? Can a woman say she truly cares If she leaves some other child in despair?   I might not be able to hold you again Kiss your face, pat your head You might cry to feel my arms Enfolding you to...

Men are from Mars, Women are from Heaven

Men are from Mars, Women are from Heaven Every young girl and boy is taught gender specific roles through social construct and role-play. How to dress up, how to walk, how to talk, what games to play, which music to listen to, which people to avoid, which colors suit us and what toys are good for us. These gender specifications come early and most times we internalize these concepts through repetitions in our societal structures of family and cultural groups. A young girl learns her place in life and a young man learns his through this role modeling. However, we also learn to rebel as a result of certain unfairness and injustice in the very same social outfits. The movies we watch are a reflection of our society and even though we know that the screen does stereotype us a bit, it is a fact that it gains most of its data from the same divided society. A young woman learns how to nurture. She learns to be a mother to her children. She takes on the role of a carer and cook and n...

Locked Down

Dearest SM, Its been a few months that the world has been struggling with life and trying to find some semblance of reality and stability in this new world. While most adults have bounced back to an almost normal life, the children are yet to see the day when they could run around barefoot through the public parks and gardens. What hit me was an incident in the family where a little child of three now refuses to leave the home. He is mortally scared of the outdoors. The day the lock down was announced, the parents sat the children down and explained to them the fears and consequences of the biological warfare on the human body. They painstakingly demonstrated the necessity of utilizing sanitizers and in a nutshell, keeping a good hygiene.  The little one heard it all and his imagination painted him a picture of which horror movies are made: The outside had something ominous, one couldn't see it, one couldn't hear it...and yet it had to be avoided. How does one avoid such an i...
